P!nk releases protest single “Irrelevant”

P!nk thrives on challenges, and in her bold new protest single "Irrelevant," she confronts anyone attempting to diminish her significance or undermine her power.

In the song's assertive pre-chorus, she sings: "You may label me as insignificant, irrelevant, and try to diminish me. You can make futile attempts to belittle me, but I won't be swayed. I'll stand as a rebel against your hypocrisy and won't dwell on your negativity. Words may hurt, but does even Jesus embrace those who remain ignorant? I'd like to believe he'd welcome us all with open arms."

The newly released track, which arrived as a surprise today, will have its proceeds directed towards Michelle Obama's nonpartisan voting initiative, When We All Vote. More information on the voting initiative can be found here.

The chorus boldly incorporates a reference to The Who's legendary 1965 debut album track, "The Kids Are Alright," with P!nk cautioning, "The youth aren't okay/ None of us are quite right/ I'm weary, but I won't rest tonight/ 'Cause I still sense vitality/ The youth aren't okay (not okay)."

The song also pays homage to another iconic track during its final bridge, Cyndi Lauper's 1983 feminist anthem "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun," as P!nk declares, "Girls just wanna have rights/ So, why must we engage in fights?"

If the message wasn't crystal clear enough, the single's artwork captures a gleeful snapshot of the singer raising her middle finger, adding emphasis to the sentiment. This marks the first collaboration between P!nk and Grammy-winning producer/songwriter Ian Fitchuk (known for his work with artists like Kacey Musgraves and Maren Morris).

In a statement regarding the song, P!nk elaborated, saying, "As a woman with opinions and the courage to voice them, it becomes exhausting when the only response is to label me as irrelevant. I am relevant because I exist, simply as a human being. No one is irrelevant, and no one can silence my voice." The mission of When We All Vote is to enhance voter participation in each election cycle and transform the culture surrounding voting.
